Frequently asked questions
Which data protection course should I take first?
If you're new to data protection, start with the BCS Foundation Certificate in Data Protection. It covers UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, the data protection principles and individuals' rights. If you already work with data protection, or have passed the Foundation, the BCS Practitioner Certificate takes you to the next level.
Which data protection certification do I need to become a Data Protection Officer?
The law doesn't require a specific certification to be a DPO. Employers often ask for the BCS Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection, because it shows you can apply the law, not just describe it. Many learners take the Foundation first and then the Practitioner.
Are your data protection courses accredited?
Yes. Our data protection courses are accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, and lead to a BCS certificate when you pass the exam. Duco Digital Training is a BCS-accredited training provider.
Do I need a legal or technical background?
No. The Foundation Certificate has no entry requirements and suits professionals from HR, marketing, IT, compliance and operations. For the Practitioner, we recommend passing the Foundation first or having equivalent experience.
What's included, and how long do I have to complete a course?
Every BCS course includes the exam fee, 12 months' online access, the recommended BCS eBooks and our Pass Assist support, with live tutor calls and practice papers. When you pass, new BCS members can claim a year's BCS Associate membership.
What jobs can a data protection certification lead to?
It helps you move into, or move up in, roles such as data protection officer, privacy or compliance officer, information governance manager, data protection analyst and risk manager. It also adds weight to roles in HR, IT, marketing and AI projects, where handling personal data well is now an expected skill.
