What you'll learn

At Foundation level, you'll learn to:
• Explain the purpose and scope of UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and related laws such as PECR
• Understand key terms: personal data, special category data, controllers, processors and data subjects
• Apply the seven data protection principles, including accountability
• Identify the right lawful basis for processing, including when consent is and isn't appropriate
• Recognise individuals' rights, from subject access to erasure and objection
• Spot a personal data breach and know what to do next
• Understand the role of the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

At Practitioner level (Business Analysis Practice), you'll learn to:
• Interpret and apply the law to real organisational scenarios
• Handle subject access and other rights requests within legal timescales
• Carry out and review Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs)
• Build data protection by design and by default into projects and systems
• Manage personal data breaches, including when and how to report to the ICO within 72 hours
• Set up compliant contracts and controls with processors and third parties
• Manage international data transfers and the safeguards they need
• Understand the DPO's position, tasks and independence
• Maintain records of processing and the documentation that proves accountability
• Understand ICO enforcement powers, fines and how to reduce your organisation's risk.

Studying Foundation and Practitioner together is the fastest route to becoming a data protection specialist. It's ideal if you're new to a data protection role, taking on significant responsibility for personal data, or preparing for a role such as Data Protection Officer, where employers often ask for the BCS Practitioner Certificate. You go straight from one level to the next while the law is fresh in your mind, with one study plan and one tutor, and you save compared with buying both courses separately.

What is the BCS Data Protection Pathway? 

The BCS Foundation and Practitioner Certificates in Data Protection combined into one discounted programme. You study them in order and earn both BCS certifications.

Who is it for? 

 Anyone who handles personal data at work and wants to progress, including privacy champions, compliance and HR teams, IT and security staff, data protection leads and aspiring DPOs. No prior knowledge is needed.

Which laws does it cover? 

UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, with reference to EU GDPR.

How long does it take to complete? 

You have 12 months to complete both courses and exams, with extensions on request. The Foundation and Practitioner courses are around 20 hours of study for each course.

What are the exams like? 

Each course has one BCS multiple-choice exam, taken online with a remote invigilator.
