If you are considering a career in Business Analysis, or already working as a BA and wondering how to formalise your expertise, two questions come up consistently: what does the role actually involve, and what is the qualification that employers take most seriously?
This post answers both.
What is a Business Analyst?
A Business Analyst is a professional who investigates business situations, identifies problems and opportunities, and translates what an organisation actually needs into clear, structured requirements that can be acted on — particularly by technology and delivery teams.
The role sits between business stakeholders and technical delivery. A Business Analyst is not a developer, but they need to understand technology well enough to bridge the gap between what the business wants and what a technical team can build. They are facilitators, investigators, and communicators as much as they are analysts.
Day to day, a Business Analyst might be facilitating workshops with senior stakeholders to understand a problem, mapping existing business processes, writing business requirements documents, developing user stories for an agile delivery team, assessing proposed solutions against business needs, or presenting findings to leadership.
The question a Business Analyst is always asking is: what does the organisation actually need — and how do we get there?
What does a Business Analyst do?
The core responsibilities of a Business Analyst typically include:
Investigating business needs — understanding what an organisation is trying to achieve, what is currently working, and what is not. This involves interviews, workshops, observation, and document analysis.
Stakeholder engagement — working with people at all levels of an organisation, from frontline staff to senior leadership, and managing conflicting requirements and competing priorities.
Process modelling — mapping, analysing, and redesigning business processes to identify inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement.
Requirements engineering — defining, documenting, validating, and managing requirements throughout a project or change programme. This is arguably the most critical BA skill — poor requirements are one of the most common causes of project failure.
Solution assessment — reviewing proposed solutions to ensure they genuinely address the underlying business need, not just the surface problem.
Communication — translating complex analysis into clear, accessible language for both technical and non-technical audiences.
The breadth of this skill set is precisely what makes Business Analysis consistently in demand across every sector — from financial services and healthcare to government, retail, and technology.
What sectors employ Business Analysts?
Business Analysis is one of the most sector-agnostic professions in UK technology. Wherever organisations have processes, systems, and the need for change, there is demand for Business Analysts. This includes:
- Financial services and banking — regulatory change, digital transformation, system implementation
- Public sector and government — large-scale digital programmes, policy implementation, service redesign
- Healthcare and NHS — system integration, process improvement, patient pathway redesign
- Technology and IT — product development, software delivery, digital transformation
- Retail and e-commerce — customer experience, operational efficiency, systems integration
- Defence and telecoms — complex programme delivery, systems analysis, change management
- Consulting — advising organisations across multiple sectors on business change and technology
There are currently over 550 live IT Business Analyst vacancies in the UK, making it one of the most stable and consistently well-compensated professional roles in the technology jobs market.
What qualifications do Business Analyst employers ask for?
BCS Business Analysis certificates are among the most widely recognised credentials in the UK BA market. They appear by name in job adverts at major employers across consulting, financial services, and the public sector.
For professionals entering the field, the BCS Foundation Certificate in Business Analysis is the standard starting point. For those already working as BAs, the BCS Practitioner-level certificates — in Business Analysis Practice, Requirements Engineering, and Modelling Business Processes — demonstrate deeper, specialist competency.
The benchmark qualification for senior Business Analysts, however, is the BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis.
What is the BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis?
The BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis is the most comprehensive BA qualification available — a structured pathway that develops the end-to-end capabilities required to succeed as a Business Analyst at a senior level.
Unlike a single exam or a generic course, the Diploma is achieved by completing four BCS-accredited Business Analysis courses and passing an oral examination. It is designed to develop practical, applied competency across the full BA lifecycle — from understanding business needs and modelling processes through to stakeholder engagement and effective solution delivery. It aligns with SFIA Plus levels 3 and 4.
The four courses are:
- BCS Foundation Certificate in Business Analysis (or BCS Foundation Certificate in Digital Business Change — contact us to discuss which is most appropriate for your background)
- BCS Practitioner Certificate in Requirements Engineering
- BCS Practitioner Certificate in Modelling Business Processes
- BCS Practitioner Certificate in Business Analysis Practice
The fifth element is the oral examination — a one-day preparation session with a BCS-accredited Business Analysis trainer, followed by the oral exam itself, in which candidates demonstrate applied understanding across the BA lifecycle.
On completing the Diploma, you receive five professional certificates in total — one BCS eCertificate for each of the four exams passed, plus the BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis itself.
Who is the BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis for?
The Diploma is designed for professionals who are serious about Business Analysis as a long-term career — particularly those in or aspiring to senior, lead, or principal BA roles.
It is well suited to:
- Practising Business Analysts who want to formalise their expertise with the most comprehensive qualification in the field
- Professionals in adjacent roles — project management, IT, operations, or consultancy — who want to transition formally into Business Analysis
- Senior professionals looking to move into leadership or consulting roles where depth of BA knowledge is essential
- Anyone whose employer is asking for formal BCS Business Analysis credentials at a senior level
There are no formal entry requirements for the Foundation Certificate, which is the starting point of the pathway. The Practitioner-level courses require Foundation-level knowledge or equivalent practical experience.
What does the Diploma cover?
Across the four courses and oral examination, the BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis develops the ability to:
- Analyse business needs and organisational objectives with clarity
- Engage stakeholders and manage conflicting requirements confidently
- Model business processes and systems in a clear, structured way
- Define, validate, and manage requirements throughout the project lifecycle
- Support effective solution design and delivery
- Communicate insight clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
The emphasis throughout is on practical, real-world application — not theory alone. The oral examination is specifically designed to assess how well candidates can apply their knowledge in realistic business scenarios, which reflects how Business Analysis actually works in practice.
